President Obama in a recent Town Hall meeting admitted that FedEx and UPS get it right...but it is the Postal Service that has big problems. Well I've been saying that for 20 years! Obama used that as proof as to why we should support his plan for government-run health care. Huh? His point- a very weak one- was that government cannot compete with FedEx or UPS, so we should not worry about government-run health care damaging private health insurance.
This is more proof that without a teleprompter and a gifted Kennedy-era speechwriter putting the words of Camelot in his mouth, Obama is actually a lousy speaker and debater.
A good debater might point out to Obama that the Postal Service has been failing for decades now...bleeding taxpayers out of tens of billions of dollars. And if we killed it tomorrow, it would still bleed us out of trillions more (that's with a T) in unfunded liabilities for the pensions and free lifetime healthcare of retired postal employees. Of course when the government-run Post Office fails, it just means we don’t get a letter on time. When government-run healthcare fails, it will mean long waits for medical care, rationing, and death for older Americans.
A good debater might point out how we- the taxpayers- are not on the hook for billions or trillions of dollars in losses from FedEx or UPS...or any private health insurance company for that matter. Why on earth would we want to hand 17% of the U.S. economy to government as a giant experiment that could overwhelm taxpayers with debt for decades to come? So much more debt, than just free healthcare for a measly few million government employees, that universal healthcare could very well lead to the bankruptcy and insolvency of America.
A good debater might point out that if we can't afford free lifetime healthcare benefits for just a few million federal employees, how could we afford to pay for free lifetime healthcare for all 300 million Americans?
A good debater might point out that if free lifetime healthcare for a few million government employees adds up to trillions in debt and unfunded liabilities, just adding 10 to 12 million illegal immigrants to our healthcare bill would surely break the bank. Let alone the entire 300 million population of America.
A good debater might point out that the federal government already runs Medicare and Medicaid, and they are the prime culprits in the future insolvency of America. So if free healthcare for only old people and poor people threatens to overwhelm the entire U.S. federal budget within 20 years (or sooner), can you imagine what providing health care for everyone would do to the budget?
A good debater might point out that government projections and predictions are always off by just a bit- often ten times too low. When Medicare was started, so-called government "experts" predicted it would cost $3 billion per year in 1970. Instead it cost $6.8 billion. They predicted it would cost $10 billion by 1990. Instead it cost $110 billion. So if Obama's "experts" now predict universal healthcare to cost $1 trillion to $1.6 trillion, do you think that perhaps $10 trillion to $16 trillion might be more accurate? You think government “experts” are more accurate nowadays? Really? Like “Cash for Clunkers” where we ran through $1 billion in government funding in 4 days. I predict we'll run through $1 trillion for healthcare in a couple of months (or sooner).
A good debater might point out that government fails and loses billions at everything it touches- from Amtrak, to Walter Reed Hospital (where returning wounded vets faced mold in their rooms), to Ethanol, to the wonderful planning of the Iraq War, to the management of the Hurricane Katrina rescue, to the dramatic failure of the entire U.S. public school system.
A good debater might point out that the Head of Canada’s Medical Association now says Canada’s system is sick and needs immediate changes. Or that in our own country, Massachusetts has already adopted government-run healthcare and costs have gone up, while performance has gone down. Big surprise, with government in charge.
Obama says we have no choice- "To Do Nothing is not an option." Really? My friends at the Congressional Effect Fund prove that doing nothing is always preferable to letting government do something. A study by the Congressional Effect Fund proves that for the past half century, when Congress is in session "doing something" the U.S. stock market is up 1%...while when Congress is out of session "doing nothing" the U.S. stock market is up a remarkable 17%.
There are many things we can do to improve healthcare in America- but they all start with getting government out of the way. You can find a detailed plan for improving our national healthcare system in my new book "The Conscience of a Libertarian." But the sad reality is that doing NOTHING would be far preferable to letting government get more involved in healthcare.
Now President Obama says the public option may be abandoned. But we all know what that means- a few moderate Republicans and a handful of Blue Dog Democrats will pass an equally disastrous healthcare compromise- but they’ll call it by a different name and declare victory. Facts and history proves that reducing government involvement in the system is the only way to improve healthcare. Any further government involvement by any name (“co-op” instead of “public option”) will be bad for consumers, patients and doctors…and disastrous for the U.S. economy.

In my just released book, “The Conscience of a Libertarian” I suggest a simple program to reform healthcare and dramatically reduce costs. Here it is in simplified form:
First, get the lawyers out of the way. Obama wants to spend an extra $1 trillion (or much more) to “save” healthcare. Instead let's try saving almost $1 trillion in healthcare cost by getting the lawyers out of the way. Almost one trillion dollars is the estimated annual cost of frivolous lawsuits, unjustified jury awards, and doctors practicing defensive medicine. We must enact tort reform, limit damage awards, prevent frivolous lawsuits, and institute a “loser pays rule” to introduce accountability and personal responsibility into our American legal system.
In virtually every democracy in the world, except the United States, the loser of a lawsuit must pay the winner's legal fees. The fact that we are the lone holdout indicates why the United States has the highest rates and costs of litigation in the world. Reform the lawyers…and you reform healthcare.
But the reason why tort reform is never mentioned by President Obama is because he's a lawyer; his wife Michelle is a lawyer; his advisors are lawyers; his friends are lawyers; his top contributors are lawyers. Can anyone spell CONFLICT OF INTEREST? No one wants to eliminate lawyers, or lawsuits. In a free society, consumers have a right to sue, and lawyers have a right to represent them. We should zealously protect that right. But we don't have a right to abuse the system. Our goals should be focused on reigning in abusive lawyers, limiting abusive jury awards, and eliminating frivolous lawsuits. That's how you start the process of healthcare reform Mr. Obama.
Second, get the government out of the way. Repeal all government laws, rules and mandates that prevent American consumers from buying any health insurance policy they want, anywhere in the country. It is government rules, regulations, laws and mandates that make healthcare expensive in the first place. Now Obama wants to solve the problem that government created by adding more government? By adding more government rules, regulations and mandates? Obama suggests that government cure the problems and high costs of government-run healthcare (Medicare, Medicaid) by forcing government to take over all healthcare? He wants to spend an additional trillion dollars to save money? The answer is to allow the American consumer to buy any policy, in any state, that best fits their family's needs, without government mandating what should be included in that policy.
Third, get the employer out of the way. Allow Americans to choose and own their own health insurance- without the employer involved. Allow all individuals to deduct healthcare costs (starting with the first dollar) directly off their income taxes. This allows anyone to change jobs or employers, without worrying about losing their health insurance.
Fourth, encourage personal responsibility with Health Savings Accounts. Consumers don't ask government or private insurance to pay for tire changes, oil changes, or minor car repairs. We are responsible for those. So why should government or insurance be asked to pay for every minor medical need, or routine doctor visit? All consumers should be encouraged to save money in a tax deductible Health Savings or Personal Wellness Account designed to pay for minor medical bills and routine doctor visits. A high deductible insurance plan will pay for everything else (the major bills), so consumers are not bankrupted by accident, illness or disease.
Finally, instead of asking Big Brother to punish Americans for bad choices, let's instead encourage and motivate good behavior with tax reductions. Motivating Americans to exercise and get in shape would save billions of dollars in health costs by reducing the need for doctors and prescription drugs, and preventing disease. How do you do that? Make healthy choices tax deductible. The federal government should make gym memberships, and the purchase of home gym equipment tax deductible. Also, vitamins and health supplements should be tax deductible (from the first dollar). It would save this country (and its taxpayers) billions of dollars to encourage that consumers make healthy choices, thereby reducing the need for expensive doctor visits, medical procedures, or prescription drugs. Shouldn't we be encouraging people to not get sick in the first place?
On the state level, we should eliminate sales tax for vitamins and nutritional supplements. Americans should be encouraged to make healthy choices that prevent illness and disease, and lower the national costs of healthcare.
If President Obama and our politicians are serious about reducing the national bill for healthcare, then they should encourage Americans to get healthy by reducing taxes for healthy choices. Instead of punishing, mandating or limiting choices- as liberal politicians and Nanny State bureaucrats often do- Libertarians like me want to increase competition in the private sector to lower costs; increase competition on the state level to expand consumer choice; decrease government involvement; and encourage, motivate, and incentivize consumers to make healthy choices by reducing their taxes. That's the Libertarian way.
Oh and one other thing- put someone in charge of this country who has actually paid for the health insurance of others. Obama and I were college classmates. In the 26 years since we graduated Columbia University, he has never created a business, funded a business, managed a business, created real jobs, or paid anyone's health insurance. On the other hand, I've spent 26 years creating small businesses and jobs, and paying for payrolls and health insurance so that others could live the American Dream. Wouldn't it be a refreshing change to have someone running the American economy who actually knows what it's like to run a business, and to pay for the health insurance of others?

It’s all over for Obama. Only six months into his first term the economy is tanking into oblivion; tax revenues are falling the fastest since the Great Depression; deficits are rising to record highs never before imagined; Obama’s polls already make him (at this point in any Presidency) one of the most unpopular Presidents in modern history; and the citizens are headed for full scale revolt as Obama ignores this economic Armageddon and throws caution to the wind in order to play out his Socialist experiment- spending trillions more on universal healthcare, cap and trade, and soon…a second stimulus. It’s all coming apart at the seams. Obama has created a citizen revolution.
Obama and his paranoid Socialist minions are compiling an “Enemies List” and they are not even shy about it- they publicly announce they want citizens to send them negative emails and stories about his universal healthcare. Note to Obama: Be sure to add this commentary to the list. I’m proud to oppose Socialism.
As riots breakout at Town Hall Meetings, Obama tries to intimidate the citizenry by calling patriots and heroic American citizens unwilling to accept a Socialist takeover of our economy…a mob. Some mob. This mob is as All-American as you can get. The are high on drugs…Geritol. They’re armed to the teeth…false teeth. And they have weapons…canes and walkers. Obama, Pelosi, Reid, Dodd and Frank are being attacked by a mob of senior citizens and parents and grandparents…scared and angry because Obama is enslaving their children and grandchildren to a lifetime of big government, big spending, big taxes, big deficits, big debt, and big unions.
These heroic American citizens actually recognize Socialism when they see it. They recognize unsustainable debt. They recognize redistribution of wealth. They recognize Obama’s brand of thug capitalism- when government fraudulently hands ownership of GM and Chrysler to the same unions that destroyed them in the first place. They recognize cronyism in the corporate bailouts and stimulus plans- when Obama transfers trillions of dollars from taxpayers to his campaign contributors and friends (ACORN). They recognize a cover up- when Obama blames the healthcare crisis on everyone BUT lawyers, because he is a lawyer, his radical wife is a lawyer, their best friends and advisors are lawyers, their biggest campaign contributors are all lawyers.
This heroic group of American citizens that Obama calls a “mob” recognizes hypocrisy when they see it- as Obama takes school choice away from minority children in Washington DC, while he sends his precious daughters to elite $40,000 per year private schools. They recognize fraud as Obama demands we all sacrifice- except for union bosses and union employees. This mob sees the truth- that a true hero like Abraham Lincoln saved the union, while Obama only cares about saving the auto union…the teachers union…and the government employees union.
They see Obama staring at economic Armageddon, and yet planning to spread the “Michigan model” to the entire country. When confronted with peaceful but angry citizen protestors, Obama calls in union thugs and goons to intimidate the citizens. It’s amazing what you can buy with billion dollar handouts and bribes to unions.
They see Obama demanding we all go “green”- while Congress orders new private jets that cost hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars and will use more fuel in a few flights than millions of citizens in their cars for a year combined.
And this angry “mob” of seniors recognizes a future of healthcare rationing run by government bureaucrats who will decide who lives and dies based on hypocrisy, cronyism and unsustainable levels of debt. They rightfully wonder whether union members will receive special privileges from the healthcare commission, while the rest of us are left to die?
Yes, Obama you have a Citizen Revolution on your hands- just as I predicted in my new book, “The Conscience of a Libertarian: Empowering the Citizen Revolution with God, Guns, Gambling & Tax Cuts.” But I’m not preaching or desiring violence. We don’t need violent revolution in America. We have freedom. We have free speech. We have elections. And we have a right to THROW THE BUMS OUT.
I am asked on hundreds of radio talk shows, “What can we do to stop Obama from Socializing America?” The answer is simple. Let your voices be heard. Call radio talk shows. Attend Town Hall meetings with your Congressmen. Write letters to the editor. Hound your elected officials, from the U.S. Senate down to the local dog catcher. Let them know first hand of your outrage. We need protests from those people that work for a living, and create jobs, and build businesses, and pay far more than our fair share of taxes. It's time to shout, scream, clench our fists in rage, and most importantly, offend. The time for politeness and manners is long since past. This man Obama and his mob of Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, Frank and Rangel are trying to destroy our economy, highjack capitalism, and enslave our children and grandchildren to a lifetime of crushing debt; redistribution of wealth through destructive taxes; a perpetual welfare state; and a Big Brother takeover of every aspect of our lives. It's time to take action before there is no economy or country to save.
But the best thing we can all choose to do is to take back power peacefully- through elections. In 2010 and 2012 we can execute a plan to THROW THE BUMS OUT. And I don’t just mean Obama and the Democrats. Throw them all out. Every single incumbent. Even the Republicans, and the so-called Blue Dog Democrats. They are all guilty. They are all part of the problem. It is through the compromises of “moderate” Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats that big government, big spending and big taxes have been enabled. It was Bush who started this mess- with excessive spending, record-setting growth of government, stimulus plans, and bailouts. Bush and the Republicans enabled Obama. They opened the door to Socialism. Our job as citizens and taxpayers is to vote against every single incumbent politician in the country.
Let’s send a message heard ‘round the world- just like our Founding Fathers in 1776. Let’s start over with a brand new government…with a brand new Congress…with citizen politicians who want to dramatically reduce the size and scope of government…and return power to the people- just as the Constitution demands.
But don’t just vote against every incumbent. For the first time in your life, vote for third party candidates who will actually cut government, not just talk about it. Vote for Libertarians (like me) who don’t support corporate welfare or bailouts. Who won’t vote for earmarks. Who don’t support the expansion of the welfare state. Who don’t want to punish success. Who don’t believe it’s greedy to want to keep more of your own money. Who have no interest in becoming career politicians.
Vote for citizen politicians who actually want to affect dramatic change in Washington, and then go back home to their families and businesses. Who want to actually reduce their own power…who want to make their own office less important…who want less control over your life…who actually believe in personal responsibility…who actually want to cut their own budgets…who don’t want to “bring home the bacon” to their own districts, but instead do what’s right for the entire country. Who will choose to vote NO on any bill that increases spending, raises taxes, or grows government.
This is the Citizen Revolution that is within our grasp. This is our 1776. Let’s set the goal right now: Not one incumbent shall remain in office by November of 2012. Not one. That’s our goal. THROW THE BUMS OUT.
Every last one of them.

My new book describes the failures, mistakes, lies and losses of government at every level, from every program, literally from the inception of government. The list is long- Amtrak, U.S. Postal Service, Hurricane Katrina, The VA System, the Walter Reed Hospital scandal, the post Iraq war planning, the public school system, and of course Medicare and Medicaid- the government run healthcare programs that threaten to eat up the entire U.S. non-military budget and single-handedly bankrupt our country.
But no story paints the picture of why government shouldn’t and cannot possibly be allowed to run national healthcare (adding up to 17% of the United States economy) like the story of a brothel called The Mustang Ranch. My adopted home state of Nevada is the only state in the nation with legalized prostitution in rural counties. The sex industry is obviously lucrative. It’s impossible to lose money, selling sex. Brothel owners have been retiring as multi-millionaires since the days of the Wild West. But no brothel in the history of Nevada ever made more money than the infamous Mustang Ranch. The owner made tens of millions of dollars, perhaps over one hundred million dollars. But he refused to pay his taxes. He was indicted by the IRS, fled the United States, and now lives on his mega-million dollar fortune in Brazil, a fugitive from justice.
But it’s what happened next that defines the failures of government. The greedy federal government actually decided to take over the management of the Mustang Ranch. And under the management of our federal government, the most successful brothel in America went bankrupt in one year.
The moral to the story:
IF YOU CAN’T MAKE MONEY RUNNING A BROTHEL, YOU CAN’T POSSIBLY RUN THE HEALTHCARE OF THE ENTIRE COUNTRY!
Next time President Obama, Nancy Pelosi, or Harry Reid tries to tell you that the government can run healthcare more efficiently than private industry, tell them that the people that run government are so incompetent that they can’t even run a brothel.
Some other observations of the week:
The federal government can’t run a “Cash-for-Clunkers” program either. More proof of the utter incompetence of government bureaucrats and politicians. They estimated the cost of this program would be $1 Billion dollars. That was actually the cost for 4 days of the program.
The moral to the story: When Obama, Pelosi and Reid estimate the cost of government-run universal healthcare at $1.2 Trillion, simply assume that number is greatly underestimated.
By the time it’s through, the bill for nationalized healthcare will be in the trillions of dollars per year. Cash for Clunkers ran through all that government money so fast, simply because the government was giving away free money. Trade in your car, and Uncle Sam will hand you thousands of dollars- no questions asked.
Well what exactly is universal healthcare? FREE MONEY. It’s a program that pays for your every health and medical need. If ou think Medicare and Medicaid are bankrupting the nation, you ‘aint seen nothin’ yet! People that have waited years, perhaps decades, for checkups, tests, operations, dental fillings- will all rush to the doctor within minutes of hearing it’s all free. The system will be overrun and overwhelmed. We’ll have instant lines, chaos, and confusion. The quality of care will deteriorate within days. Rationing will be necessary within a short period of time (you know like “Grandma is 80, let her die”). The $1.2 Trillion budget will be gone in a matter of months…or weeks. Like everything government estimates, the numbers will multiply dramatically and tragically. Government-run healthcare will bankrupt America...just as it bankrupted Medicare and Medicaid on a smaller level…and the most successful and profitable brothel in the history of Nevada.
One more observation of the week- about Obama’s Infamous Beer Summit:
Please have someone inform Obama that we are broke. As in busted, insolvent, indebted (to China) and bankrupt. No more free beers for guests at the White House. From now on entertain at your own expense, or make it a CASH BAR. The taxpayers can’t afford to pay for free drinks every time you make a misstatement.

I'm sorry to say it but “I told you so.” Obama is a radical socialist, with a chip on his shoulder. And finally America is taking notice. His true colors are showing and his polls are dropping like a lead balloon. Later today a Rasmussen Poll will be released showing that after only 6 short months, Obama's glow is gone. His approval ratings are plummeting into negative territory. Remarkably, someone with such strong support and goodwill from the American people only weeks ago, has lost that support almost overnight. Rasmussen, the most accurate pollster of the 2008 election, will show that Obama's support is actually below 50% for the first time. Among independents, his support is a remarkably low 37%. Obama is rapidly becoming the most unpopular President in recent history. His poll numbers are already slightly lower than George W. Bush at the same point in his Presidency (about 6 months in), and those same ratings place him 10th in popularity out of the last 12 U.S. Presidents (and quite possibly headed for last place).
Why is this happening? First and foremost Obama over-reached. His ambitious, radical pro union, big spending, big tax agenda has finally caught up with his image. Some liberals might actually understand that. But what liberals don't understand is the powerful negative effect that his appointment of Sonia Sotomayor (and her reverse racist beliefs) had on Obama's image. I'll discuss that in a moment. But the real straw that broke the camel's back was Obama's comments about the police. In an unheard of example of audacity, a President of the United States weighed in on a local confrontation between a white police officer and a black Harvard professor (who happens to be Obama's buddy). Without knowing of the details of the case, our President called the actions of a courageous police officer doing his job and risking his life “dumb” and defended a buddy who cursed out the police officer. The real radical leftist has appeared and it is shocking to America, especially white America, who gave Obama the benefit of the doubt that he was in fact a nice, moderate, “uniter, not divider” who had finally put race aside. But in Obama's radical world, race is never put aside.
I wrote commentaries well before the election warning America that we were dealing with a radical leftist with Socialist views. He entered the Presidential race ranked the most extreme liberal of any of our 100 U.S. Senators, yet claimed to be a moderate and “uniter, not divider.” I knew better. You see I attended Columbia University with Obama. Same class, same major (political science, pre-law), same year of graduation (1983). And what I witnessed at Columbia was classmates so extreme in their radical left-wing views as to make me physically sick. I saw classmates who literally hated America, hated capitalism, and rooted for the death of a conservative President. I sat in political science class in 1981 in stunned disbelief as my classmates cheered, high-fived and celebrated like it was New Years upon hearing the news that President Reagan had been assassinated (that was the first erroneous report we heard- that he was dead).
I debated my classmates for 4 long years about capitalism and free markets, and heard their views up close and personal. They weren't moderate Democrats simply looking to protect the lower classes. They were radical Marxists and Socialists looking to destroy capitalism, tax and unionize businesses to death, and greatly expand government and the welfare state in order to hand power to “the disadvantaged.” I met classmates- both white and black- who seemed to openly despise and resent white people (and especially wealthy white people). And who openly hated policemen and called them “pigs.” This is the world that Obama hails from. It is a world view that disgusted me then, and now more than ever.
Most of my Ivy League classmates wound up going into any one of 3 professions- media/journalism, education and law. Is it no wonder our country is so screwed up? These are today the biased, radical, leftist-bordering-on-Socialist journalists who openly shower Obama with adulation, and denigrate and slander any political leader with a conservative or capitalist point of view. These are today the educators who brainwash our children from a pro big government, pro tax, pro-union, pro affirmative action point of view. And most importantly, these are the lawyers who spend their lives suing businesses (thereby killing jobs) and running up the cost of health care with frivolous lawsuits. One of the primary reasons that health care is so expensive is because of lawyers (like Obama and wife Michelle). What we desperately need to do to save healthcare and lower costs is to implement tort reform, not universal health care run by government. But you'll notice Obama doesn't mention that. Why? Because he's a lawyer. Like so many politicians from the left, he protects lawyers and refuses to fight for tort reform, instead fraudulently blaming others for the health care crisis that in so many ways his profession has contributed to.
Obama's first 6 months in office are now showing his true radical colors. He is not like the rest of us. He is not a moderate. He is not a uniter. His smile and calm demeanor hides a radical viewpoint. He is out to help only one group- Democratic voters. Obama's tunnel vision is about helping the poor, disadvantaged, minorities, union members, and government employees. And of course anyone who represents them- lawyers, union bosses, government bureaucrats, and lobbyists. In Obama's radical leftist view the rest of us can go to hell.
Obama talks nonstop about “sacrifice.” Yet he hasn't asked anyone of the key groups of his voting bloc to sacrifice a thing. His entire bloated spending spree is about hiring millions of new federal government employees and handing trillions of dollars to the states so that they can save the jobs (and raises) of state and local government employees. And of course handing out welfare checks that he calls “tax cuts” to people who never paid income taxes in the first place.
Americans- especially white Americans- were THRILLED to elect a black President to once and for all prove that racism is dead. To show the world that America is the greatest nation in the world. To show that the color of a person's skin is no longer a factor in success. But what they didn't understand is how much Obama himself does not believe in those principles. It didn't take long for Obama to show his true colors. He came out with guns blazing with his radical Socialist ideas- the biggest government spending programs in history; gigantic new taxes that threaten to wipe out the upper middle class and small business owners (coincidently, the two groups that make all the contributions to Republican, Conservative and Libertarian causes); radical and risky trillion dollar ideas like Cap and Trade and Universal Healthcare in the middle of a depression; Card Check- a law designed to unionize every large (and possibly small) business in the country, and turn our entire U.S. economy into one big Detroit, Michigan; apologizing and genuflecting to every radical, terrorist and anti-American murderer in the world; and appointing a Supreme Court nominee who thinks a Latina women can make better decisions as a judge than a white male…and backs up that reverse racist view by throwing out the test results of hard-working, heroic white firefighters who passed an exam for promotion- simply because they were white. (Author's Note: I don't personally believe there is such a thing as "reverse racism." You are either a racist or not).
Sometimes winning is not a victory. In this case, I believe that the Sotomayor nomination was deadly for Obama's image among the same moderate, independent and even conservative voters who took a chance and voted for Obama to end the issue of race forever. They didn't take that chance, and give Obama the benefit of the doubt, so he could smash them in the face with a reverse racist, affirmative action queen. He may have won Sotomayor the lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court, but he lost his benefit of the doubt with middle class and blue-collar white voters.
But next came Obama's Waterloo- his decision to weigh in on the police confrontation in Cambridge during a nationally-televised press conference. On a personal note, I'm a white male. Yet in my lifetime I've had guns pulled on me three times by police. Were those incidents frightening? Of course. Was I shaken? Of course. But in all 3 cases, the police were correctly doing their job. And of course, being white, I could not blame the incidents on the color of my skin. Did it ever occur to President Obama or that Harvard professor that any homeowner- white or black- would have experienced the same thing in a similar situation.
Guns weren't drawn on me (by police) because I'm white- they were drawn on me because police were simply trying to defend property or protect society. They didn't care about the color of my skin. They were simply doing their job. The same thing appears to be true in the controversial incident in Cambridge. Was a gun pulled on Obama's friend because he was black? Or because he appeared to be a burglar breaking into a home? Obama wasn't there and should not have weighed in. That was a big mistake. But more importantly, when a policeman shows up at a home because a neighbor reports witnessing a break-in, that policeman's life is in danger. Any hesitation could result in his death. He may never see his wife or children again. His job is to pull his gun and ask questions- no matter the color of the skin or the importance of the person he is confronting. That Harvard professor should understand that it was his property that this policeman was protecting. It was his neighborhood and neighbors that this policeman was protecting.
That professor should have been smart enough to show respect to a police officer with a gun drawn asking questions. That professor's only response should have been to treat that officer politely and do exactly as he was asked. He should have shown his I.D. and politely and nicely defused the explosive situation. When a policeman's life is in potential danger, he has every right to treat the situation seriously. He has every reason to question the intruder and to not assume that he is the law-abiding homeowner. Those kind of assumptions get a policeman killed. Without being there to see the actual events as they unfolded, a U.S. President has only one reasonable choice- shut up and stay out of the controversy.
Obama made a big mistake. He just couldn't help himself- the real Obama (the radical leftist who doesn't support the police) came out. I believe this minor controversy, when combined with the negative impact of the Sotomayor nomination, may eventually be seen as the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back for the political image of Barack Obama. From this point on, the bloom is off the rose, and the benefit of the doubt is off Obama. The moderate uniter is now rightfully seen by middle America as the radical Socialist divider.
